The Student Union is your student government at BU.

Over the years, this body has changed and expanded to ensure both that every area of the campus is represented and that the Union takes initiatives in all areas of student life. Here’s an overview of how your Union works.

General Assembly: This is the core of the Union. Here, any student is welcome to come and learn both what advocacy issues are being pursued and how to get involved as well. Every two weeks, we gather to go over what’s being worked on by various parts of the Union and inform the student body. Afterward, every student can go out to their constituencies and spread the word about what their student government is doing for them.

Voting Members are students who represent a college, RHA, or consortia within BU and give their votes on any Union business (proposals, reports, or other kinds of action). Non-voting Members are any other students who wish to come and participate.

Within Union, there are a few components:

The Executive Board:
The president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer are elected by the entire student body of BU to lead the Student Union internally as well as represent the interests of everyone in the community.

Executive Staff
: A certain number of freshmen (decided by the E-Board) are selected to help with advocacy issues. It is also a great way for new BU students to get involved and learn the ins and outs of Union.

The Committees
: Every General Assembly member, voting or non-voting, must be a part of at least one committee. Here, Union’s initiatives are worked on with the help of many students. Ranging from issues of academics to safety or technology, these committees are formed to focus on the biggest issues facing BU and to help link similar organizations behind a common cause. Every committee nominates its own chairman or chairwoman, who must then be approved by the General Assembly.

The Directors
: The Directors within the Student Union are students who act as point persons regarding issues within BU. They predominantly act as liasons throughout the community to rally efforts either to lead changes in policies in BU or outside in the Boston area. From environmental concerns to city affairs or public relations, they work closely with the E-Board on some of the biggest projects within the Student Union. The Directors apply to the E-Board and must then be approved by the General Assembly.

The Cabinet
: The Cabinet of the Student Union is comprised of the E-Board, Executive Staff, Committee Chairs, and Directors.
